Christmas Finger Painting: How To Make DIY Fingerprint Christmas Ornaments

If your kiddos love finger painting, they’ll love these fingerprint crafts! Both my children loved making theirs. Grab your supplies and head to the table. You’ll either want to be near a sink or grab some hand wipes to clean your child’s fingers off.

Fingerprint Ornament Ideas

Grab an ornament and think of a Christmas figure, Christmas shape, or Christmas theme that you want to make. We made a gingerbread man, some snowmen, a star and a Christmas tree! You could even do thumbprint hearts. I’ll use the gingerbread man for an example of the first keepsake ornament we made.

Gingerbread Thumbprint Ornaments

The gingerbread ornament is made just using the thumb! Paint your child’s thumb brown and then place thumb on the ornament for a head, a body, 2 arms and 2 legs. You will probably have to reapply the paint to your child’s thumb once or twice between the presses on the ornament.

Snowman Fingerprint Ornament

While you are letting that one dry, your child can make more fingerprint Christmas ornaments! The three snowmen are your child’s three middle fingers dipped in white paint and then laid down on the ornament at the same time. These make a great handmade gift. What family member wouldn’t love to make an adorable keepsake fingerprint snowman ornament?

Star Thumbprint Christmas Ornaments

The Star of Bethlehem is perfect for the holiday season. This ornament just takes one thumb print five times as you rotate the Christmas ball ornament to have it create a star. Start the first thumbprint pointing straight up. Then do the next two thumb prints off to each side and finally add the bottom two points of the star.

Christmas Tree Fingerprint Ornament

Have your child dip their index finger in green paint and then apply twice creating this shape < but with the point towards the top of the ornament. Then they can add two more of the < shape below the first creating the tree shape, like so <<<.

How To Add Finishing Touches To The Fingerprint Ornaments

After the fingerprints (or thumbprints as the case may be) dry, you can go back and add details (eyes, carrot nose, smiles, Christmas lights, etc…) with your paintbrush or q-tip cotton swab. You may even want to add the child’s name and year with a small paintbrush or permanent marker.

Then allow the DIY ornament to dry again. Acrylic paint dries pretty quickly so in 5-10 minutes the small details should be set. My kids had so much fun making each special ornament.
