The red carpet is the best place to make a sartorial statement. Where some celebrities take the opportunity to debut a new hairstyle or fresh manicure, leave it to Angelina Jolie to put her spin on a buzzy red carpet moment. At the 2024 Tony Awards, she arrived with a new teeny tiny tattoo on her sternum. Forget about a manicure close-up, we need a tattoo cam, stat!
The Tony Awards took place yesterday, June 16, in New York City with a star-studded red carpet that included Cynthia Erivo, Sarah Paulson, and Alicia Keys, to name a few. Jolie was also in attendance—the multi-hyphenate helped produce the highly-nominated show The Outsiders, and was a presenter at the awards. On the carpet, the best accessory to her custom Versace gown was the new dainty tattoo on her chest.
Although a tattoo may not feel newsworthy, Jolie’s was especially intriguing. To start, the placement is so chic—it rested on the center of her sternum, like where a pendant on a necklace would sit. What’s more, it’s very small. The dainty tattoo is hard to see, that’s how delicate it is. Taking a closer look, it depicts a bird taking flight with its wings spread open toward her left shoulder. Although the 49-year-old didn’t reveal the meaning of the tattoo, the imagery felt like a powerful symbol, especially because Jolie ended up winning her first Tony at the awards, bringing her closer to coveted EGOT status.
The rest of her look stuck to Jolie’s edgy-cool style. She wore a velvety green strapless Versace gown that had dramatic draping. She also attended the carpet with her daughter Vivienne, who wore a two-piece vest look that matched the color of Jolie’s gown. For glam, her signature honey-blonde hair rested on one shoulder, and she wore bronzy makeup with a glittery champagne eye look.
While the new ink could be faux for the awards ceremony, we’d wager it’s here to stay. After all, Jolie is known for her meaningful tattoos. If her new ink sparked some inspiration, small tattoos are everywhere right now, so there’s a bevy of cool designs to choose from.
